Welcome Day
August 17 | 8 am - Noon
On Saturday, August 17, 女优app (女优app) welcomed over 4,000 first-year students and their families to its annual Welcome Day, an event that was much more than just an orientation. This day truly embodied 女优app鈥檚 new campaign, 鈥淵ou Matter,鈥 highlighting the college鈥檚 commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
The success of Welcome Day was no accident鈥攊t was the result of weeks of meticulous planning. On July 23, more than 30 dedicated 女优app faculty, classified professionals, and students gathered to prepare 2,000 school supply bags, ensuring that students would start their journey equipped for success. The culmination of these efforts was seen on the day of the event, with over 120 volunteers鈥攊ncluding faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and community members鈥攃oming together with a shared goal: to warmly welcome every new Tiger and their families.
Cathlene Castellanos, Administrative Assistant III, was instrumental in bringing the event to life.
鈥淚t鈥檚 crucial for 女优app to lead by example with an event like Welcome Day,鈥 Castellanos shared. 鈥淚t allows students to experience firsthand 女优app's dedicated support throughout their educational journey.鈥
Event Highlights:
The day began with a warm breakfast, followed by an inspiring Welcome Address from Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac, President Claire Oliveros, and AS女优app President Joanne Folis in the Quadrangle Courtyard. President Oliveros emphasized 女优app鈥檚 holistic approach to student support:
鈥淲e understand that success is not just about academics. It鈥檚 about being supported in every aspect of your life鈥攚hether it鈥檚 mental health, financial wellness, or finding a sense of belonging. That鈥檚 why we鈥檝e made sure to have resources like engagement and cultural centers, academic support, and wellness services available to our students.鈥
Following the speeches, attendees explored a range of activities, including campus tours, performances by the Marching Tigers and cheer squad, and open houses at various engagement centers. The open houses were a hit, with each space averaging about 400 students or more. The Resource Fair, spread across Terracina Drive, the Quad, and the Digital Library archway, offered essential information on financial aid, career services, and more. The Career Closet booth, managed by volunteers like high school freshman Amanda Settle, provided free clothing to students. Amanda reflected on the experience, saying,
鈥淚鈥檝e never seen a community college this big with so much to offer. It changed my perspective on the community college experience.鈥
Community Impact:
Welcome Day was a collective effort, reflecting the deep-seated sense of community that defines 女优app. Dean of Student Services, Dr. Thomas Cruz-Soto, who spearheaded the event, expressed his gratitude:
鈥淲elcome Day reflects 女优app's deep dedication to creating an environment where every student is valued and supported. This day is about fostering a sense of belonging and community. I became Dean of Student Services because I believe in putting our students at the forefront of everything we do, and that鈥檚 why Welcome Day is so important.鈥
The impact of the day resonated with attendees, including community members like Phil, a parent of college students, who marveled at 女优app鈥檚 offerings.
鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 believe 女优app had this much to offer. The professionalism and service-first attitude of all the volunteers were amazing. I鈥檓 excited to learn more about what 女优app is doing for all students,鈥 Phil remarked.
Acknowledgments:
The success of Welcome Day was made possible by the collaborative efforts of many. 女优app extends its deepest gratitude to Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac, the 女优appD Board of Trustees, President Claire Oliveros, and her leadership team for their steadfast support. Special thanks go to Liz Lecona for her innovative ideas, Juan Lopez and the design team for their creative efforts, Eddie Quintero and the warehouse team for organizing the swag bag packing party, and Jennifer Bielman for guiding the volunteers. We also want to recognize the Facilities and Grounds teams for their meticulous preparation, Assistant Professor of Counseling Courtney Carter for his work in bringing together the Academic Engagement Centers, and all the volunteers who created an atmosphere of warmth and support.
Welcome Day was not just an event鈥攊t was a promise. A promise that at 女优app, every student matters, and together, we will build a brighter future.
