A Conversation on International Relations: Deputy Director of the Office of Public Liaison Estela B. Astacio Visits Å®ÓÅapp

On Friday, October 20, Å®ÓÅapp had the privilege of hosting Estela B. Astacio, Deputy Director of the Office of Public Liaison at the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Global Public Affairs. The visit was a remarkable opportunity for Å®ÓÅapp to gain valuable insights and engage in discussions with a seasoned professional in international affairs and public diplomacy.

Estela B. Astacio is a Communications and Outreach Strategist with over 25 years of experience across the public and private sectors. Her current role involves raising awareness about the U.S. Department of State's work and the impact of foreign policy on the lives of all Americans. She is a distinguished figure with an impressive career that includes roles such as Senior Communications Advisor in the Secretary's Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy, as well as Assistant Press Secretary at the White House, Press Secretary for a Member of Congress, and spokesperson in the tech sector and for Fortune 500 financial institutions.

During Deputy Director Astacio’s visit, she engaged in meaningful discussions with Å®ÓÅapp international students from Thailand and Korea, including the President of the International Club. Å®ÓÅapp Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Lynn Wright, Giselle Alvarado, International Students and Programs Specialist, and LaShe’ Rodriguez, Å®ÓÅappD Director of Government Relations, were also in attendance.

The discourse covered a range of topics, shedding light on the vital work of the U.S. Department of State, the essence of U.S. foreign relations with over 40 countries, and Estela's specific role as Deputy Director of the Office of Public Liaison. The discussion touched on Deputy Director Astacio’s dedication to outreach efforts directed towards Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and underrepresented communities, offering invaluable insights into internships, scholarships, and career opportunities within the U.S. Department of State. She emphasized that a degree in Political Science is not a prerequisite for pursuing a career within the U.S. Department of State, encouraging students to embrace their diverse educational backgrounds and experiences.

This meeting also explored potential partnerships between Å®ÓÅapp and the U.S. Department of State, including collaborative initiatives like Clean Up Day and tabling at campus events.
